Charitable giving
We encourage our employees to be good citizens in the communities where they live and work through a number of staff-focused initiatives.
Into Action fundWe set aside funds to support staff who are either raising money for, or giving their time to, a UK-based registered charity, or who are involved in running local community or youth sports groups.
Give As You EarnWhen it comes to supporting UK registered charities, Give As You Earn is a simple and tax efficient way for employees to support the charity or charities of their choice through payroll giving. Chosen charities benefit as they can rely on regular donations, allowing them to budget and plan what to do in the long term. SSE covers all the scheme's administration costs and the chosen charities benefit not only from employee donations, but also a yearly top up from the company.
Support in kindWe support educational initiatives through the provision of materials aimed at 7-11 year-olds. These comprise a comic and associated activity sheet, and an interactive website which cover topics including safety and energy efficiency.
We also have a Museum of Electricity in Christchurch, Dorset, and Visitors' Centres at our Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station and at Pitlochry Dam and Power Station in Perthshire. These facilities are free to schools organising visits.
Additional financial support
Although we do not support unsolicited requests for support from community groups and charities, funds are set aside to support energy efficiency and fuel poverty initiatives.
Major development – community benefitWe are undertaking a major programme of capital investment in England and Scotland. At all stages in the developments, we are committed to open and honest communication with local communities on which these developments have an impact, including undertaking voluntary pre-planning consultations to determine local views and address local concerns.
We maintain an active programme of engagement with stakeholders such as local authorities, MPs, MSPs, Ministers, officials and agencies. We have a separate Community Benefit Fund for such projects. Where possible, community benefit programmes are agreed in conjunction with local stakeholders, including local Councilors, MSPs and other elected representatives.
