Project type:

Transmission and connections

Last website update:

August 2010

Location:

Dounreay to Beauly, Scotland

As the licensed electricity transmission company for the north of Scotland, Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Ltd (SHETL), a subsidiary of Scottish and Southern Energy plc (SSE), is required to ensure there is sufficient electricity network capacity for those seeking to generate renewable energy in the north of Scotland.

Over the next three years SHETL will be undertaking a programme of upgrade works to the existing Dounreay to Beauly electricity transmission line, including the installation of an additional set of conductors on the eastern side of the line in order to increase its capacity.

Work will be ongoing at various stages of the line over the coming months but it should be noted that the voltage of the line will remain unchanged, no additional towers will be erected, there will be no increase in the height of existing towers and the new conductors will look the same as the existing ones from ground level.

It is anticipated that the works will commence with the foundation and ground investigation works in September 2010. The new conductor stringing will be carried out in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to the above works, SSE are also required to reinforce the substation at Dounreay. This will involve the construction of a new indoor substation next to the existing indoor substation. The new substation will house switchgear and transformers to support the upgraded overhead line and to allow for future renewable energy projects to be connected. The existing substation will remain fully operational during these works and the new substation will be built within the current substation boundary. Construction works on site are due to commence in Spring 2011 with an expected completion date in 2012 to align with the new overhead line

While every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum, we appreciate that this work may have an impact on local residents. Over the coming months we will ensure that we communicate with them regarding any work that is going on in their area.
