Abernedd power station
In September 2008 an application was submitted to the UK Government to construct and operate a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Station in Abernedd. The proposed site is located in Baglan Bay Energy Park close to Port Talbot in South Wales. This brown-field site was formerly used  as a chemicals facility, utilising this industrialised land allows existing infrastructure to be used.

Subject to consent, SSE has plans to build the project over a five year construction period. The 870MW station will be built in two distinct stages with each project phase resulting in 435MW capacity being connected to the National Grid.

A CCGT power plant generates electrical power with high efficiency. Power is generated using a gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and steam turbine in combination. The energy from the high temperature exhaust of the gas turbine is recovered in the HRSG and subsequently generates steam which is then utilised by the steam turbine.

An Environmental Impact Assessment was carried out for this project, from this study an Environmental Statement (ES) was produced which was submitted as part of the planning application. A non-technical summary of the ES can be viewed or downloaded from the link below.
