What You Can Do

Being energy efficient has many benefits for us, with the environment benefiting most of all. Recent increases in energy costs have also encouraged many of us to consider how we can save energy. There are many simple things you can do, which will help reduce your electricity and gas consumption. The following suggestions could save you money and energy...

Cooking

  • Don't use too much water - just enough to cover the food.
  • Pressure cookers and microwaves are cheaper to run than a conventional oven or hob.
  • Always put lids on saucepans.
  • Most jug kettles have a water level indicator which allows you to boil exactly how much water you need.

Heating

  • Don't overheat your home - lowering the temperature by one degree Centigrade can reduce your heating bill by up to 10%.
  • Use thermostats and timer controls wherever possible.

Laundry

  • If you don't have a half load setting, ensure that you have enough washing before using the full load setting.
  • Spin clothes before tumble-drying.
  • Use the most appropriate setting on your tumble dryer.

Lighting

  • Use low energy bulbs - they will save you a lot of money in the long run - they use less electricity and last much longer.
  • Don't use higher wattage bulbs than necessary.
  • Turn off lights when not needed.

Refrigeration

  • When buying a new appliance examine the energy label and buy the most efficient.
  • Stand your fridge or freezer in the coolest place - not beside your cooker and defrost the freezer regularly.
  • Use a thermometer to check your refrigerator is at the correct temperature.
  • Don't leave the door or lid open any longer than necessary.

Hot water

  • Take a shower instead of a bath - it uses less water, which saves you money.
  • Fix dripping taps.
  • Put the plug in the wash hand basin - don't waste hot water.
  • Make sure you have a thermostat on your hot water tank and that it is set no higher than 60 degrees Centigrade / 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

Insulation

  • Insulation is the most cost effective way to reduce your fuel bills and keep your house warm.
  • Hot water tank lagging is the most cost effective device - energy savings will pay for the tank jacket in a few months.
  • Thick curtains act as very efficient insulation when you close them at night.
  • Other measures include cavity wall and loft insulation, secondary glazing, double glazing and under floor insulation.

Ventilation

  • Open windows or use extractor fans to remove moisture caused by cooking, baths and showers. This helps to improve heat retention of walls and helps prevent condensation damaging decoration.
