What are the roles?

We have opportunities for people to join our Power Distribution business as a Craft Trainee. Opportunities exist for Linespersons, Cable Jointers and Electrical and Mechanical Fitters.

Trainee Linesperson / Cable Jointer
Your role would be as part of a team involved in the refurbishment, maintenance and repair of overhead lines and underground cables. Your training will take place over two years and would involve a combination of work based learning and formal qualifications.

Trainee Electrical / Mechanical Fitter
As part of a team, you would be involved in the maintenance and repair of high voltage transformers, circuit breakers and switchgear. Your training would take place over two years and would involve a combination of work based learning and formal qualifications.

Once you complete your training, you may need to participate in 'stand by' duties, which would mean helping with providing out of hours assistance with network and equipment repairs 'out of hours'.

What qualifications or experience do I need?

All successful candidates will:

  • Have a minimum of Standard Grade / GCSE or equivalent in English and Mathematics
  • Possess good technical and problem solving skills
  • Ideally have previous technical or industrial work experience
  • Be able to use your initiative to solve problems
  • Be flexible to meet customer requirements and the business needs

How do these roles fit within the SSE group?

Our Power Distribution business owns and operates two electricity distribution networks, one in England and the other in Scotland. They comprise some 61,000 substations and 124,000 kilometres of underground cables and overhead lines. Our key responsibilities include maintaining safe and reliable supplies of electricity, and restoring supplies as quickly as possible following interruptions.

What salary and benefits would I receive?

You can expect a starting salary of around £14,000 - £16,000. This increases as your training progresses and you attain various authorisations and qualifications.
